Chemical, Biological and Nuclear Agents and Incidents Research Paper
Chemical, Biological and Nuclear Agents and Incidents - Research Paper Example There are four types of classifying various hazards using a color-coding system, which are the following: Blue (for threats to health or physical injuries), Red (flammability), Yellow (reactivity) and last, White (water reactivity). A new classification which uses the symbol of a radioactive propeller has been added to indicate a material is radioactive. This paper tackles the common chemical, biological and nuclear agents deemed to be dangerous and common incidents involving them. Most of the hazardous materials (hazmat, for short) are essentially man-made although a few of these are naturally-occurring, such as certain types of anthrax and radioactive elements. The three major categories of hazmat agents are discussed individually, and incidents involving the same materials, such as accidents during transport and spills or leaks during production. Only some 39 elements as found in the Periodic Table of Elements are actually hazardous, the rest of the materials are the results of combining these elements into various mixtures and compounds which made them hazardous if these are not handled properly (Burke, 2003, p. 43). Chemicals ââ¬â it is the U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT) that came up with the nine major classifications for hazardous chemicals that are now widely used. These classes are mostly explosives, compressed gases, flammable liquids, flammable solids, oxidizers, poisons, radioactive materials, corrosives and last, miscellaneous hazardous materials (OSU, 1997, p. 1). Industrial chemical compounds are often long-lasting (they take years and decades to degrade to be harmless) and find their way into water supplies, lakes, rivers and oceans and along the food chain. Research conducted eliminated smoking, drinking, lifestyle and diets as probable factors and the polluted environment is the most likely cause of many cancers (Steingraber, 1999,

Description Paragraph Essay Example for Free
Description Paragraph Essay Preferably, description paragraphs should concentrate on action (verbs), rather than sensations (adverbs and adjectives). Writers should assume the role of readers whose idea of the described events is, in entirety, constructed by the paragraph content. Description paragraphs should be detailed, clear, and render the represented reality chronologically. Rather than providing advice, descriptive paragraphs ought to focus on essential information that is presented in a step-by-step manner. Writers commit plagiarism every time they reword sources without crediting original authors or fail to reference their sources appropriately. Plagiarism through paraphrasing can happen in two cases. First, writer may choose to substitute some words from the original with different vocabulary, rearrange words, or rearrange the whole paragraph. In this way, he or she presents stolen information expressing it with his or her own words. And second, writer may try to use exactly the same vocabulary and stylistic constructions and use them with respect to another context. Plagiarism occurs in both cases. I have been looking on, this evening, at a merry company of children assembled round that pretty German toy, a Christmas Tree. The tree was planted in the middle of a great round table, and towered high above their heads. It was brilliantly lighted by a multitude of little tapers; and everywhere sparkled and glittered with bright objects. There were rosy-cheeked dolls, hiding behind the green leaves; and there were real watches (with movable hands, at least, and an endless capacity of being wound up) dangling from innumerable twigs; there were French-polished tables, chairs, bedsteads, wardrobes, eight-day clocks, and various other articles of domestic furniture (wonderfully made, in tin, at Wolverhampton)

Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act Essay -- Health Care
Social Problem The Problem our policy is intended to address is the lack of affordable health insurance as well as the lack of affordable health insurance to persons with pre-existing health conditions. The Extent of the social problem reaches to numbers of persons and populations in the United States. Living without health insurance are in excess of 50 million people in the United States, which is roughly equivalent to 16.7% of the population, or one in six U.S. residents (Wolf, 2010). Defining this as a problem are those most affected by the inaccessibility barrier which includes illegal immigrants, the elderly, and those persons unable to attain insurance coverage due to a pre-existing medical condition. Who disagrees? The Related Social Values pertaining to this social problem certainly center on the dignity and worth of the person. Accessibility to health care via affordable health insurance would be considered more than a civil right but indeed a matter of human rights. This problem also touches one of the key American social values, which is social responsibility. The value is self-descriptive and is opposed by the competing American social value of Individualism. In terms of social values as they relate to social work and the implication relating to the profession, the NASW, the National Association of Social Workers, outlines Social Workersââ¬â¢ ethical responsibilities to that of broader society (Social Work Search, 2003). The Competing Social Values would include the opposing key American social values of Individualism and Self-care whereby the focus would be on private interest instead of public purpose. This competing value is significant because in times of private interest, acquisition of essential human needs w... ...r, Henry J. Family Foundation. (2011, April 22). Suicide :: essays research papers
Suicide As I researched suicide I found that the numbers are staggering. Suicide is the ninth leading cause of death in the US, with 31,204 deaths recorded in 1995. It was at number eight on the list in 1998, and as the numbers are steadily increasing it threatens to move up the list. This approximates to around one death every seventeen minutes. There are more suicides than homicides each year in the United States. In 1993, the suicide rate was 11.3/100,000. Two-thirds of all suicides under the age of 25 were committed with firearms (accounting for most of the increase in suicides from 1980 to 1992). The second most common method was hanging, third was poisoning. 61% of all suicides involve firearms. From 1952 to 1992 suicides among teens nearly tripled. Today, it is the third leading cause of death for teenagers aged 15-19 (after motor vehicle accidents and unintentional injury). Suicide is increasing, particularly for teens and for those over 65. In young people, the suicide rate is relatively low (13.5/100,000 in 1993), but it is still a leading cause of death. In older people, the suicide rate is very high, but it is not a leading cause of death (in white males over 85, the suicide rate in 1993 was 73.6/100,000). In all age groups, men commit suicide successfully more than women (around four times as much). However, females are more likely to attempt suicide than males do. In 1998, white males accounted for 73% of all suicides. Together, white males and white females accounted for over 90% of all suicides. In teenagers, the average ratio is 5.5:1. The ratio increases with age within this group. (http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/pub-res/10lc92c.htm / http://www.befrienders.org/info/statistics.htm) The previously listed facts are staggering and a surprise to most. Another surprising or should I say confusing area is depression and its relation to suicide. Most suicides occur by people who are suffering from depression. Certain life difficulties such as the loss of a loved one, divorce, stress at work, or a series of disappointments can contribute to depression. And sometimes, depression may just run in the family. More than 19 million Americans, approximately one in 10 adults, suffer from depression each year. Everyone feels sad at some point, but what doctors call clinical depression is very different from just being "down in the dumps." The main difference is that the sad or empty mood doesn't go away after a couple of weeks, and everyday activities like sleeping, socializing or working can be affected.

New Product Development Strategy for Google Essay
Google is a world known company founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1997 based on the new name of their search engine that was BackRub that operated in Standford more than a year. The word Google itself comes from a pun of word ââ¬Å"googolâ⬠a mathematical term for the number represented number 1 followed by 100 zeros that reflect their mission to organize infinite information in the web. Google is known for its search engine ââ¬Å"Googleâ⬠that is the worldââ¬â¢s largest search engine since 2000 defeats other search engine such as Yahoo! and Bing. Since then, Google innovates and creates new products by partnership with or acquisition of some companies and the result is famous services their provided in the web or real life such as Gmail, Google+, Google Maps and Android mobile platform that is used by a lot of people around the world. QUESTION 1 Discuss and suggest some feasible application considerations when developing a new product development strategy for Google. Google is one of the biggest companies in the world that creates some of the famous product such as Google search engine, Android mobile platform, Gmail e-mail and many more. These products can compete with other products from other companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Yahoo! and many more that has market lead first rather than Google that join the business competition several years later even take a lead in the market. These products are not instant famous created but instead itââ¬â¢s created based on intensive and repetitive research that makes these products to be accepted by the customers. Below are some considerations when develop new product development strategy. 1. Corporate Planning Since Google established at 1998 with their web search engine ââ¬Å"Googleâ⬠, it started to create other services and applications that can be used by users to help them do their activities and business. Google focus into three primary market segments that is end users that is using Google for searching services, advertisers that will be charged when user clicks the advertisements and partner web sites of the Google (Google, 2005). Google utilizes the power of advertisements especially in the internet since there are a lot of Google users around the world that are using Google anytime and anywhere by using AdWords that can be used by anyone to advertise their business and AdSense that can be used by online publishers with displaying relevant ads about their contents. Google follows and creates customerââ¬â¢s trends in technology market to make sure that Google can be accepted by customers. For instance, at 2010 Google initiated cloud computing as their centerpiece strategies since a lot of companies and users are moving their storage data and processing into cloud (web) and Google offered their services for cloud computing using Chrome OS and Google Cloud Services. And Google strategies for 2011 are LTE or 4G development to gives users fast internet connection for their gadgets, mobile money that can be used by users using their mobile phone to do transactions including banking, buy and sell and review places using Near Field Communications (NFC), and increase availability of inexpensive smartphones since in 2011 Android has been used worldwide by users that can reach low end market. To expand the technology market target of users, Google creates some partnerships with some companies such as MTV, eBay, MySpace to help promotes and puts their products in their websites and services as well. Also Google do mergers and acquisitions of some companies such as Pyra Labs, Urchin, dMarc and many more to help create new market target and also new source of technology that can be developed for their products later on. 2. Marketing Planning To make sure Google introduce new products into the correct market target, Google needs to plan their marketing strategies to make sure customers and users can receive Googleââ¬â¢s new products well. Google marketing plan can be divided into 4 categories that are Product, Price, Promotion and Place. Below are the explanations of 4 categories: a. Productà Google has categorized their products into some categories that are advertising solutions, business solutions, web solutions and product solutions that are used entirely in the web. In advertising solutions Google offers AdWord that can be used to advertise peopleââ¬â¢s businesses with flexible payment arrangements and AdSense that is used by publishers to advertise their products and contents in the web. Google will charge advertisers every time users click on Google advertisements in the web that help to increase the visitors to their website . Google offers some solutions for business purpose such as Google Cloud Services that will help business to put their data and processing into the cloud (web) that will help to expand their business and also minimize maintenance and expense since all services will be monitored by the Google itself. Also Google provides Search Appliance whether hardware or software that helps to document search in the organization. Web solutions also offered by Google for internet users such as Google search engine, Gmail e-mail services, Google+, Google Map and Blogger website blogging that can be used for free. Also Google sell products that partnership with some distributors to sell from bag, trolley and many more and also some products with Google brands in it. b. Price Google offers different price range for Googleââ¬â¢s products that are offered to the customers from free into paid price with distinct price difference for each price. For free Googleââ¬â¢s products itââ¬â¢s offered for the users for web services product such as Google+, Google Maps, Android, and Blogger that can be used by users in the web to do their activities or businesses. The reason why Google makes their web services product free is because they believed that services in internet should be free and easy to use for all the users. Googleââ¬â¢s products with paid price is also have different price based on type of products that customer want to use. For example, AdWords will charge for the customers based on the cost per click (CPC) by the web users to advertisers with minimum startup cost for US$5.00 with flexible budget arrangement per day. Search Appliance also has different prices based on the type of hardware and software to used whether for mid size co mpany to multinational company. c. Promotion Google promotion is done by using the power of mouth advertising from one web users to other web users since users are using Google search engine to help them search what they want. While other search engine such as Yahoo! and Bing have complicated interfaces, Google offers simple and easy to use interface that makes it used by a lot of people and a lot of people will recommend it through words. Google creates some partnerships with companies to help them promote their products into the market such as Samsung and Google works together to create Google Nexus Prime, the first smartphone with Android 4.0. platform to run the phone. And Google offers open source for some of their products such as Android and Chrome OS so that a lot of people will familiar with the products before itââ¬â¢s released. d. Place Users can find Google easily in the internet since a lot of users are using Google to search what they want in the internet. With internet, Google can expand their products and businesses untrammeled with region, language and cultures problems since now users can access internet and check information anytime and anywhere. And using that, Google can easily promote their products and services to the users based on their search. Google also creates some representative offices in some of countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and India to help customers to set up some services and products because maybe there are some changes that need to do before put the services and products into their business. 3. Technology Management Technology management is very important to Google because with good technology management Google can produce and innovate their product based on the technology resources they have. Also with good technology management Google can compete with other competitors in the same market area to get customers and users. For example of technology management is Google Chrome, a web browser that was introduced at 2008 to accommodate user to dynamic and complex web that is based on a speed, simplicity and security. Google Chrome design is different with other browsers such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox because Google Chrome doesnââ¬â¢t have unnecessary toolbar or add on that makes browser slow and heavy processes but instead itââ¬â¢s using JavaScript engine V8 to handle all web applications fast. Google Chrome isolates each page or tab into its own ââ¬Å"sandboxâ⬠to make sure the information in each page are secured from other page. Also Google Chrome is the first browser that supports HTML5 and extensions gallery that increases user experiences when browsing web. Google provides updates and patches for the Chrome but users can choose whether to install the updates and patches by themselves, automatically install or not to install. Google also provides source code of Google Chrome that makes it open source for public to help developing Google Chrome with name Chromium. After Google Chrome web browser hits the market, Google launched Google Chrome OS that is an cloud computing operating system based on Linux that will store the data and services optionally in the web and hard disk as well. Google also puts Chrome OS source code into open source with name Chromium OS that can be developed by public that helps development of Chrome OS. Google Chrome OS officially hits the market at 2011 in collaboration with Acer and Samsung with laptop called Chromebook. Inside Chromebook, user wonââ¬â¢t need to install anything else but instead running web applications in interface just like Google Chrome web browser that makes the process faster, easier and more secure than other OS.

Free Essays on Issues In Platos Republic
Platoââ¬â¢s analysis of the truth through "The Parable of the Cave" is an effective, valid tool to help us analyze our own life and ultimately find the truth. He did this by first analyzing his own life and the fetters and bearers who used shadows to keep him from reaching the roadway to wisdom. It has proved to be an effective assessment not only when he was alive but even up until today. The parable symbolizes manââ¬â¢s struggle to reach understanding and enlightenment and is a universal and everlasting concept. Plato used the bearers in his parable to symbolize people who control what we see and do, people who hold us back from using our full potential to decide what we want to see for ourselves. An example from modern society would be TV producers or record label executives, ultimately they decide what songs we will sing tomorrow and what shows we will watch. They limit us by allowing only what they want to reach us and penetrate our minds and lives. The fetters were what kept the escaped prisoner in the parable from turning his head and seeking his own truth, as well and new things. They kept him from being able to control what he saw for himself. The naming of objects was another hindrance, because it only caused prejudging and encouraged a closed mind. The fetters, bearers, and naming of objects make it harder to find our own truth, although it is not impossible. As Plato knew then, they exist in everyoneââ¬â¢s lives. Humans have to travel from the visible realm of image making and object naming to the intelligible, invisible realm of reasoning and understanding. The "Parable of the Cave" symbolizes this trek and how it would look to those still in a lower realm. The things our senses perceive as real are just shadows on a wall. Just as the escaped prisoner ascends into the light of sun, as we amass knowledge, we ascend into the light of true reality: ideas in the mind. Yet if someone goes into the light of sun and embra... The Quarrel of Words essays
The Quarrel of Words essays Burn in hell you stupid faggot! Imagine someone shouting this at you. This is what is happening around campuses everywhere to people. This is Hate Speech. Hate Speech is any speech intended to hurt or discriminate against another person because of race, sex, religion, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, etc. Hate Speech is a very complicated matter. Some people believe speech codes violate the First Amendment, while others believe some speech is undeserving of the First Amendment. Campus guidelines and speech codes are also complicated matters, which will be discussed. A lot of people do not agree with campus guidelines or speech codes because they violate the First Amendment. Many people believe that if we are able to put regulations on speech on campus, then what is going to stop us from imposing those regulations elsewhere. People do not want to lose their rights of free speech. Author Henry Louis Gates Jr. speaks of this. He says, There is also a practical reason to worry about the impoverishment for the national discourse on free speech. If we keep losing the arguments, then we may slowly lose the liberties that they were meant to defend.(183) Gates is stating what could happen if we were to regulate and make restrictions. Retired Professor Franklyn S. Haiman is an avid supporter of the First. He states, First and foremost, suppressing the overt verbal or symbolic expression of group hatred does not make the attitudes that give rise to such expression go away. Most probably, the people who hold such attitu ...

Appreciating Life as the Central Theme of the Movie Awakenings Essay
Appreciating Life as the Central Theme of the Movie Awakenings - Essay Example The plot of the movie directly relates to the primary theme in a very literal way. In telling the story of people whose lives have been taken away from them, in effect, via a medical illness for which there is no cure, overtly conveys the value of life. Though the patients are living and breathing individuals, they are extremely constrained in terms of movement, communication, independence and common daily activities that most people engage in every day without a second thought. They must live in an institutional environment where they are under constant supervision and care and cannot enjoy any of the trappings of ââ¬Ënormalââ¬â¢ life such as love, activities, work, recreation and the pursuit of personal interests and fulfilment. As the movie focuses on the solitary and sedentary nature of these patients lives during the early parts of the film, the changes that occur when they are dosed with the new drug are made even more apparent, exciting and moving by contrast as the audi ence begins to see them leave their comatose states and become active individuals who each have a unique personality. Each patient, in particular Leonard the protagonist, is so utterly appreciative and excited by this new lease of life, that it forces the audience to relate to positive aspects of their own lives in a more appreciative way. As the narrative continues and the audience slowly realises that the effects of the drug are limited and of a short duration, this delivers a dramatic impact as life is again snatched away from the patients. As we see Leonard eventually retreat back to his vegetative state and his acceptance of his fate, it re-instates the vulnerability of life and the massive importance we must place on its value while we have it. The fact that Leonard tries to make the most of the rest of his time as an active individual despite understanding his destiny, is extremely moving and it effectively emphasises the theme of the movie. One scene in particular, where Leo nard dances with his love interest and tries to savour each moment of it as he knows it is his last, is particularly poignant. The setting of the story amidst a hospital environment also effectively serves to emphasise the movieââ¬â¢s theme. Hospitals are synonymous with death, illness and the mortality of life and this setting immediately relates to these ideas. Seeing characters taking medication, undergoing medical treatment and generally being in vulnerable and fragile states is directly indicative that life is a precious gift that should not be taken for granted. Sickness is often something that healthy people take for granted, in that, if they are not sick, they tend to focus on other problems within their lives, to the detriment of not enjoying their lives as much as they should. It is usually only when people are diagnosed with an illness that they begin to appreciate all that having a healthy body and mind means. In this medical setting, this theme is very dramatically c onveyed both literally and symbolically. Through the portrayal and development of characters the movie also explores its life-affirming theme. From the perspective of Leonard it is perhaps examined at its deepest level as the audience witnesses this character go from a catatonic state, to a thoroughly active

Level 5 leadership and Transformational Leadership in the Construction Literature review
Level 5 leadership and Transformational Leadership in the Construction industry of Project Management - Literature review Example Many organisations will root for outsourcing arrangements at first in overseas countries mainly to capitalise on cheap labour, reduced taxes, the possibility of hiring skilled employees in their own country, as well as, a 24 hour readily available workforce. Despite these obvious advantages, the recent trend of reshoring has perhaps stemmed from the corporate concerns on operational mishaps that have obviously precipitated a decline in both productivity and quality. According to a recent research conducted by Warwick Business School and GE Capital UK, a quarter of the mid-market firms are seriously considering re-shoring all or some of their business activities in the next three years. According to the research, the reasons for the trend in reshoring comprise of productivity, rise in the overseas costs, rising control or management issues or access to skilled labour. The research further reveals that, with the reshoring, companies are expected to witness a greater than average rise in revenues to the tune of 14.8 % leading to an overall 12.1 % uplift in the profits. In terms of the activities, which would be reshored, internal business services comprised of 23 percent, procurement and customer-facing services at 21% and 19% respectively. Other activities earmarked are product development, manufacturing and production. According to the study, which was conducted on 100 companies, reshoring will most likely create over 378 500 jobs and add à £27.6 billion to the national mid-market revenues annually. The research also found London to be the favourable re-shore destination. South-East follows closely and is then followed by West Midlands, North West, Yorkshire, and Humber (Green, 2014). Therefore, how does a company draw the conclusion on whether reshoring is right for its business activities? Well, time is an important and a changing factor in business. Consider Toyota as an example.

Reaction to a video - Essay Example Little did I know that in the history of America, a Black adolescent could be shot dead for having whistled to a white woman. Before watching this video, this whole racism thing seemed like a melodrama to me but after having seen this video, things have started to make more sense to me and I can now understand why people take racism so seriously. I had not learned about this before probably because I never understood the importance and gravity of the real issue. Basically there is a whole history, and a very tragic and dark history of America when it comes to the people of color in general and the Black people in particular. It would be totally wrong to suggest that circumstances and conditions for the Black Americans today are the same as they were in the 1950s. However, this does not mean that the radical change in the status and acceptability of the Black Americans in America since 1950s has made the study of such videos irrelevant. I think that this topic should definitely be tau ght in the high schools in America even if racial discrimination is not as apparent in the American society today as it was before so that our children and young generation can really understand the seriousness of the issue like I did after watching this video. ... It breaks my heart to see Emmett Tillââ¬â¢s mother narrate the tragic account of his only sonââ¬â¢s murder at this age. Especially when she says, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦I saw that his tongue was chopped out. I noticed that the right eye was lying on midway his cheekâ⬠¦.â⬠(Mobley). At the same time, I feel proud of that brave and courageous lady for having the guts to show his body as such to the world ââ¬Å"I think everybody needed to know what had happened to Emmett Tillâ⬠(Mobley). The picture of Emmett Tillââ¬â¢s mutilated dead body oozes a very strong message that can shake the foundations of the law-making and law-enforcing agencies and organizations of our country. Unfortunate and tragic events like this should not be forgotten and should always be shown to the young generation to instill hatred for racism in their hearts and to motivate them to behave in a civilized manner in the society. This sad event also has some lessons for the young generation; lesson of bravery can be learned from Willie Reed who stood up against the whole crowd of White men and testified how Emmett Till had been killed. Even though Many Till could not get the justice she was looking for, yet the murder of her only son and the trial and then acquittal of the murderers created such a spur both in the national and in the international sphere, that exposed the racist face of America as well as the lack of justice in American institutions and also became the basis of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, ultimately leading to equality of rights between the Black and White Americans. Racism has lost strength in the roots of the society which it had back in the 1950s, but it has not altogether vanished. Even today, several accounts of racism are witnessed in

Labor and Employment Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Labor and Employment Law - Essay Example The previous department manager left the company during this employeeââ¬â¢s leave. The new manager has agreed to this employeeââ¬â¢s return to the previous job, at the previous rate of pay. But the manager has denied the request for the 11 weeks of withheld salary. In this context, the provision for the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 can be applied to some significant extent. Some of the most important clauses of the act are (EMPLOYEE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES, 2009): For the purpose of incapacity because of pregnancy, or prenatal medical care and/or child birth; In order to take care for the concerned employeeââ¬â¢s child after the birth, also placement for the adoption or related to foster care; To take care for the concerned employeeââ¬â¢s partner, son or the daughter, or the parent, who possesses a grave health condition (EMPLOYEE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES, 2009); One of the most important properties of the act is that if an employee takes leave in regard to any one of the above mentioned conditions, then the business organization where the person works is liable to provide the total amount of employment compensation to that employee. However, there is certainly an upper limit to the total time span of taking the leave ââ¬â 12 months of maximum time (EMPLOYEE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES, 2009). However, the FMLA requires covered employers to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to eligible employees for the following reasons: â⬠¢ For incapacity due to pregnancy, prenatal medical care or child birth; â⬠¢ To care for the employeeââ¬â¢s child after birth, or placement for adoption or foster care; â⬠¢ To care for the employeeââ¬â¢s spouse, son or daughter, or parent, who has a serious health condition; or â⬠¢ For a serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform the employeeââ¬â¢s job. Under these circumstances it is most likely to argue that the company or the new manager is not liable to pay the full 11 weeksââ¬â¢ salary to the employee. Hence, in this situation, there has not been any violation of the concerned law (EMPLOYEE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES, 2009). Situation B: One employee is 68 years old and has been with a particular company for 42 years. During the annual performance review last month, it was determined that this employee was doing ââ¬Å"above averageâ⬠work in the department. Employee B was denied a promotion due to age. A co-worker given the promotion, who is 32 years old, received a performance review of ââ¬Å"adequate.â⬠In this respect there has been a violation of the act. This is due to the fact that the person who has been promoted is the co-worker of another person who has been originally chosen by the company for promotion. As this 68 years old person was denied taking the promotion by the company, therefore it became one of the most illegal aspects to share the promotion with another co-worker of this 68 year s old employee. In this respect, as the older employee himself did not reject taking the promotion and as this decision has been entirely been forced on him by the company, therefore the law has significantly been violated. In this respect the older employee is expected to question the company regarding their act. Also the employee is expected to make legal case against the company asking why the management of the company has denied his

Reflection - Assignment Example The UAE establishes new economic and political partnerships with other world countries creating a new appealing image of the country. This new role brings challenges to people in the UAE; they face the need to learn more about other people to understand them and make their communication effective. People cannot exist separately from their culture. The definition of culture is complex because it is derived from the context. Generally, culture is often related to separate dimensions of human life like legal sphere or personal communication. When 2 or more cultures exist in one community, they experience conflict caused by fundamental differences in their world views. If people do not have any knowledge about other culture, they can easily aggravate this conflict. On the other hand, cultural awareness let different people find a common ground. One more challenge is represented by language differences; people who do not know local language are automatically treated worse than locals. Despite these negative effects, cultural diversity changes the UAE to the better. People have more opportunities to communicate with foreigners and get some practical tips about cross-cultural communication. People who travel to the UAE and come to work there are obliged to learn more about local culture and people. People become more understanding and attentive to each other. I have seen many web resources which are related to explaining the UAE culture and eti1uette to foreigners. Moreover, people become less superstitious about the UAE and Islam when they learn about them in detail. When my grandfather was young, the country was totally different. It is even difficult to compare my world with his recollections. Old traditions still exist in the UAE society but they become more liberal under the influence of other cultures. Now he cannot be flexible enough to understand all the changes which happen every

Price Leadership in Coffee Shops Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Price Leadership in Coffee Shops - Coursework Example All of these coffee shops have specific strategic moves for them to obtain substantial market share, competitive advantage and long-term existence in their industry. Their ultimate goal is to increase profitability, which is the bottom line. However, one of the obvious strategies that can be identified when it comes to how these coffee shops compete with each other is based through the price of their product offerings. The proponent visited these three coffee shops and recorded the recent prices of their product offerings which include Cappucino, Cafee Latte, Chai Latte, Americano, Mocha, Espresso, and Hot Chocolate. The actual raw data gathered by the proponent are shown in Appendix 1 to 3. Common product offerings among the three coffee shops are Cappucino, Cafee Latte, Americano, Mocha, Espresso and Hot Chocolate. Each of these product offerings has corresponding three kinds of prices namely for small, regular and large categories. The corresponding prices of each category of offerings are shown in Tables 1 to 3. For visual identification of differences in the respective prices of the offerings of the three coffee shops, a bar graph is used in plotting the raw data from Appendix 1 to 3. In most of the categories of product offerings from among the three coffee shops and as shown in the previous tables, Starbucks seems to be in the lead when it comes to pricing. From regular category of product offerings, Starbucksââ¬â¢ prices for its product offerings are relatively higher than those of Costa Coffeeââ¬â¢s. The same trend is observed from regular to large category types of offerings. Starbucks relatively prevailed over than the prices of Costa Coffee and Caffe Nero. As stated earlier, Starbucks had more than 700 stores in 2009 and more than half of them are in London. This company is still growing and in fact, has dominated in its industry. The very proof is its
Abortion All Sides of the Issue Essay Example for Free
Abortion All Sides of the Issue Essay When you think of abortion, the first thing that comes to mind is the death of an unborn child. Trying to identify all possible sides of the issue of abortion is a difficult task. Choosing a side is even harder. Although abortion issues are not recognized and discussed any longer, it is still a serious matter and continues today. The research that has been done on the sensitive subject of abortion has been going on for quite some time now. The Definition of Life In the dictionary, abortion regularly defined as removing a fetus or an embryo from the uterus to end a pregnancy. When completing research this past week, I found out that when abortions were first starting out, they were only performed on women who were not capable of carrying a child or the fetus was incapable of surviving. Now, women are given the choice to carry, give the child up for adoption or having an abortion no matter what the situation is. The Issues of Abortion There are plenty of health risks and issues that come along with abortion. ââ¬Å"One woman from an unnamed clinic had a partial abortion performed in which half of the baby was never removed. (Rendon, 2002). See more: Social process essay Just like any other procedure, abortions come along with not only the physical effects, but also the mental stress of it all. After having my abortion in June of 2005, I was in complete distress. Being in that types of situation made me want to curl up in a small ball and cry all day. Being that I have chosen the topic of abortion, I was gradually trying to observe and view all different sides of abortion. Of course, we have all seen in the news when abortion first became an issue, ââ¬Å"there were many people pro-life and many others, pro-choice. (Scheidler, 2002). I still feel that even though abortion is not talked about much today, it is still a serious issue and still continues as the days pass. Which Side Do You Choose? When reading the different articles from ProQuest and seeing how the supporting and differing viewpoints made me feel, I began to take the position as a pro-life supporter. One of the issues I have is with the abortion of fetusââ¬â¢ after the 24 week period. I feel that if you know in the beginning that you arenââ¬â¢t going to want to keep the child, then why wait so long for the abortion. Some babies are able to survive after only twenty-eight weeks of being in the womb. This is another reason I am pro-life. Another issue that I can identify with related to my hypothesis is the religious viewpoint of abortion. Like most people, in whom I have researched upon, feel that abortion is a form of death. We all know that one of the Ten Commandments in The Bible states that ââ¬Å"thou shall not killâ⬠. If death is a sin, then why is abortion legal? The third issue that I have related to abortion is the act of ââ¬Å"partial abortionâ⬠. After reading further on this partial procedure, which I was not to familiar with, I found out that the abortion is only halfway done and the doctor performing finishes killing the fetus. Just thinking about this situation makes me angry because abortion, in my eyes, is already wrong and performing it partially is just as bad. Being a Pro-Life Supporter My position on the issue of abortion is someone who is pro-life all the way. On June 13, 2005, I had an abortion. It was one experience I swore to never have again. I have a ten month old son now and I am so grateful for him and I am glad that God allowed me to have another child. I was in just getting out of college at the time when I had my abortion. I was young and scared and was not stable enough to bring a child in the world, or so I thought. Women need to realize that they do have a choice in situations like these. Many married couples or women longing for, who are unable to conceive, want to have children. Why not choose to give the gift of an adoption over abortion? At least knowing that a child was not killed and made someone else happy would be a better option. Adoption can be a good thing for someone not wanting to have a baby that they knew they couldnââ¬â¢t raise and support. You Have a Choice Another choice that women have is the option to keep the child. Starting your family is great and what better joy than to bring a baby into the world. Deciding whether to abort or keep the child is a difficult decision when it comes down to it. I know that from past experience, I was not able to really care for a baby the way I am now. I was in college, as an on-campus resident; during my first year when I found out I was pregnant. Not wanting to put my future in jeopardy, I chose the option of abortion. Personal Experience from the Heart When I first found out that I was expecting, I did not tell anyone but a close friend of mine at North Carolina Central University. She was very excited and was encouraging to me. She gave great influential advice and was there to offer me a helping hand. But, after thinking it over, I decided and knew that this was something that I just could not do. After getting out of school in May of 2005, I began to think about it even more. Going through the all-day sickness and being tired was no joke. I was really going through and I thought I just could not take it anymore. I talked things over with my cousin and she assured me that everything would be okay. After setting up my scheduled appointment, I felt a sense of relief. I was sad at the same time because I knew that I was killing a life. A few people living around me had seen my pregnancy glow and knew that I was indeed pregnant. But when they did ask, I simply told them no and walked the other way. On the day of my appointment, I was nervous and scared all at the same time. I was having these mixed feelings go through my mind one after another. I didnââ¬â¢t know what to do. When we arrived, I thought about telling my boyfriend and cousin, who traveled with us for support, that I would rather take the three hundred and eighty dollars I was holding in my hand and go buy a crib. I wanted my baby and I didnââ¬â¢t want to go through with it. After the procedure was finished, I was escorted to a room where the nurses and staff were in such a good mood and being so nice to me. All I could think was, ââ¬Å"What did I just do? â⬠I could not believe that I had just gone through with the procedure. I stared in aw looking at these nice nurses who were just so happy when all I could do was cry. Now, looking back on that day, I still feel the hurt and pain of going through that entire day. I know that I felt relief in mind but sorrow in my heart. I am now a proud mother of an eleven month old son and I know that God made me a mother for a reason. Being a mother is the greatest thing that has happened to me and if it wasnââ¬â¢t for my son, I donââ¬â¢t know where I would be right now. Abortion is indeed a very controversial topic with issues that people do recognize sometimes, but not most of the time. Yes, there have been plenty accounts of where abortion issues were in papers, but itââ¬â¢s not as recognized as ââ¬Å"Paris Hilton goes to jailâ⬠. This is the type of situation I am discussing. Today, indicating from my research, the number of abortions has increased from the past two decades. Sometimes I feel that women choose abortion because it is the easy way out. You may fail to realize that not only girls, but also boys are very advanced these days. All kids from the age of fourteen and up are sitting at home playing video games and playing with dolls. More and more pregnancies are happening to girls who havenââ¬â¢t even reached the age of eighteen. ââ¬Å"Women never really realize the great joy they have until going through the clinic walls and giving their baby up for a small price. â⬠(Rothstein, 1995). This statement is so true because you do not know the great joys of being a parent until you have your own. People everywhere should take a stand to get abortion laws passed so that they will only be performed if necessary. Taking a stand is important because we all stand somewhere in this world. There are many ways to support abortion foundations and groups.

Ansoff Product Market Growth Matrix Marketing Essay
Ansoff Product Market Growth Matrix Marketing Essay A useful planning tool in respect of markets and products is the matrix developed by Igor Ansoff (H Igor Ansoff, 1918-2002), who is regarded by some as the Father of Strategic Management. Fully titled the Ansoff Product-Market Growth Matrix, the tool was first published in Harvard Business Review, 1957, in Ansoffs paper Strategies for Diversification. The Ansoff product-market matrix helps to understand and assess marketing or business development strategy. Any business, or part of a business can choose which strategy to employ, or which mix of strategic options to use. This is a fundamentally simple and effective way of looking at strategic development options. existing products new products existing markets market penetration product development new markets market development diversification Each of these strategic options holds different opportunities and downsides for different organizations, so what is right for one business wont necessarily be right for another. Think about what option offers the best potential for your own business and market. Think about the strengths of your business and what type of growth strategy your strengths will enable most naturally. Generally beware of diversification this is, by its nature, unknown territory, and carries the highest risk of failure. Here are the Ansoff strategies in summary: Market penetrationà Developing your sales of existing products to your existing market(s). This is fine if there is plenty of market share to be had at the expense of your competitors, or if the market is growing fast and large enough for the growth you need. If you already have large market share you need to consider whether investing for further growth in this area would produce diminishing returns from your development activity. It could be that you will increase the profit from this activity more by reducing costs than by actively seeking more market share. Strong market share suggests there are likely to be better returns from extending the range of products/services that you can offer to the market, as in the next option. Product developmentà Developing or finding new products to take to your existing market(s). This is an attractive strategy if you have strong market share in a particular market. Such a strategy can be a suitable reason for acquiring another company or product/service capability provided it is relevant to your market and your distribution route. Developing new products does not mean that you have to do this yourself (which is normally very expensive and frequently results in simply re-inventing someone elses wheel) often there are potential manufacturing partners out there who are looking for their own distribution partner with the sort of market presence that you already have. However if you already have good market share across a wide range of products for your market, this option may be one that produces diminishing returns on your growth investment and activities, and instead you may do better to seek to develop new markets, as in the next strategic option. Market developmentà Developing new markets for your existing products. New markets can also mean new sub-sectors within your market it helps to stay reasonably close to the markets you know and which know you. Moving into completely different markets, even if the product/service fit looks good, holds risks because this will be unknown territory for you, and almost certainly will involve working through new distribution channels, routes or partners. If you have good market share and good product/service range then moving into associated markets or segments is likely to be an attractive strategy. Diversificationà taking new products into new markets. This is high risk not only do you not know the products, but neither do you know the new market(s), and again this strategic option is likely to entail working through new distribution channels and routes to market. This sort of activity should generally be regarded as additional and supplementary to the core business activity, and should be rolled out carefully through rigorous testing and piloting. Consider also your existing products and services themselves in terms of their market development opportunity and profit potential. Some will offer very high margins because they are relatively new, or specialised in some way, perhaps because of special distribution arrangements. Other products and services may be more mature, with little or no competitive advantage, in which case they will produce lower margins. The Boston Matrix is a useful way to understand and assess your different existing product and service opportunities: boston matrix modelà à product/service develeopment The Boston Matrix model is a tool for assessing existing and development products in terms of their market potential, and thereby implying strategic action for products and services in each category. low market share high market share growing market problem child (rising) star mature market dog cash cow Cash cowà The rather crude metaphor is based on the idea of milking the returns from previous investments which established good distribution and market share for the product. Products in this quadrant need maintenance and protection activity, together with good cost management, not growth effort, because there is little or no additional growth available. Dogà This is any product or service of yours which has low market presence in a mature or stagnant market. There is no point in developing products or services in this quadrant. Many organizations discontinue products/services that they consider fall into this category, in which case consider potential impact on overhead cost recovery. Businesses that have been starved or denied development find themselves with a high or entire proportion of their products or services in this quadrant, which is obviously not very funny at all, except to the competitors. Problem childà These are products which have a big and growing market potential, but existing low market share, normally because they are new products, or the application has not been spotted and acted upon yet. New business development andà project management principlesà are required here to ensure that these products potential can be realised and disasters avoided. This is likely to be an area of business that is quite competitive, where the pioneers take the risks in the hope of securing good early distribution arrangements, image, reputation and market share. Gross profit margins are likely to be high, but overheads, in the form of costs of research, development, advertising, market education, and low economies of scale, are normally high, and can cause initial business development in this area to be loss-making until the product moves into the rising star category, which is by no means assured many problem children products remain as such. rising starà Or star products, are those which have good market share in a strong and growing market. As a product moves into this category it is commonly known as a rising star. When a market is strong and still growing, competition is not yet fully established. Demand is strong; saturation or over-supply do not exists, and so pricing is relatively unhindered. This all means that these products produce very good returns and profitability. The market is receptive and educated, which optimises selling efficiencies and margins. Production and manufacturing overheads are established and costs minimised due to high volumes and good economies of scale. These are great products and worthy of continuing investment provided good growth potential continues to exist. When it does not these products are likely to move down to cash cow status, and the company needs to have the next rising stars developing from its problem children. After considering your business in terms of the Ansoff matrix and Boston matrix (which are thinking aids as much as anything else, not a magic solution in themselves), on a more detailed level, and for many businesses just as significant as the Ansoff-type-options, what is the significance of your major accounts do they offer better opportunity for growth and development than your ordinary business? Do you have a high quality, specialised offering that delivers better business benefit on a large scale as opposed to small scale? Are your selling costs and investment similar for large and small contracts? If so you might do better concentrating on developing large major accounts business, rather than taking a sophisticated product or service solution to smaller companies which do not appreciate or require it, and cost you just as much to sell to as a large organization. Customer Matrix:- This customer matrix model is used by many companies to understand and determine strategies according to customer types. good products not so good products good customers develop and find more customers like these allocate your best resources to these existing customers and to prospective customers matching this profile educate and convert these customers to good products if beneficial to them, failing which, maintain customers via account management not so good customers invest cautiously to develop and improve relationship, failing which, maintain customers via account management assess feasibility of moving these customers left or up, failing which, withdraw from supplying sensitively Assessing product type is helped by reference to the Boston matrix model. There is a lot of flexibility as to what constitutes good and not so good customers use your own criteria. A good way to do this is to devise your own grading system using criteria that mean something to your own situation. Typical criteria are: size, location, relationship, credit-rating and payment terms, is the customer growing (or not), the security of the supply contract, the service and support overhead required, etc. This kind of customer profiling tool and exercise is often overlooked, but it is a critical aspect of marketing and sales development, and of optimising sales effectiveness and business development performance and profitability. Each quadrant requires a different sales approach. The type of customer also implies the type of sales person who should be responsible for managing the relationship. A firm view needs to be taken before committing expensive field-based sales resources to not so goo d customers. Focus prospect development (identifying and contacting new prospective customers) on the profile which appears in the top left quadrant. Identify prospective new customers who fit this profile, and allocate your business development resources (people and advertising) to this audience. Consider also What are your competitor weaknesses in terms of sectors, geographical territory and products or services, and how might these factors affect your options? Use for assessing each competitor as well as your own organization or department. Many organizations issue a marketing budget from the top down (a budget issued by the Centre/HQ/Finance Director), so to speak, in which case, what is your marketing budget and how can you use it to produce the best return on investment, and to help the company best to meet its overall business aims? Use the models described here to assess your best likely returns on marketing investment. The best way to begin to model and plan your marketing is to have a record of your historical (say last years) sales results (including selling and advertising costs if appropriate and available) on a spreadsheet.à The level of detail is up to you; modern spreadsheets can organize massive amounts of data and make very complex analysis quick easy. Data is vital and will enable you to do most of the analysis you need for marketing planning. In simple terms you can use last years results as a basis for planning and modelling the next years sales, and the marketing expenditure and activities required to achieve them. Simple business plan or sales plan tools examples:- These templates examples help the planning process. Split and analyse your business or sales according to your main products/services (or revenue streams) according to the profit drivers or levers (variables that you can change which affect profit), eg., quantity or volume, average sales value or price, % gross margin or profit. Add different columns which reflect your own business profit drivers or levers, and to provide the most relevant measures. quantity total sales value average value % gross margin total sales or gross margin product 1 product 2 product 3 product 4 totals Do the same for each important aspect of your business, for example, split by market sector (or segment): quantity total sales value average value % gross margin total sales or gross margin sector 1 sector 2 sector 3 sector 4 totals And, for example, split by distributor (or route to market): quantity total sales value average value % gross margin total sales or gross margin distributor 1 distributor 2 distributor 3 distributor 4 totals These simple split analysis tools are an extremely effective way to plan your sales and business. Construct a working spreadsheet so that the bottom-right cell shows the total sales or gross margin, or profit, whatever you need to measure, and by changing the figures within the split (altering the mix, average prices, quantities, etc) you can carry out what if? analysis to develop the best plans. If you are a competent working with spreadsheets it is normally possible to assemble all of this data onto a single spreadsheet and then show different analyses by sorting and graphing according to different fields. When you are happy with the overall totals for the year, convert this into a phased monthly plan, with as many lines and columns as you need and are appropriate for the business. Develop this spreadsheet by showing inputs as well as sales outputs the quantifiable activity (for example, the numbers of enquiries necessary to produce the planned sales levels) required to produce the planned performance. Large businesses need extensive and multiple page spreadsheets. A business plan needs costs as well as sales, and will show profit as well as revenue and gross margin, but the principle is the same: plan the detailed numbers and values of what the business performance will be, and what inputs are required for incorporating these factors and financials into a more formal phased business trading plan, which also serves as a business forecasting and reporting tool too. Adapt it to suit your purposes. This plan example is also available as a PDF, see The numbers could be anything: ten times less, ten times more, a hundred times more the principle is the same. Consider also indirect activities that affect sales and business levels, such as customer service. Identify key performance indicators here too, such as customer complaints response and resolution levels and timescales. Internal lead referral schemes, strategic partnership activity; the performance of other direct sales activities such as sales agencies, distributorships, export activities, licensing, etc. These performance factors wont normally appear on a business plan spreadsheet, but a separate plan should be made for them, otherwise they wont happen.

art upsets science reassures :: essays papers
art upsets science reassures ââ¬ËArt upsets, science reassuresââ¬â¢ (Braque) Analyse and evaluate this claim. The difference between; reality and fantasy, an accurate representation of what is, and a brilliant orchestration of the mind, can often become blurred with the paintbrush of an artist. Yet, as Braque would surely agree, there are certain areas knowledge that only serve to reify our reality, saving us from delving into the fantastic chasm of questions arising from art. This specific area is of course science. One can often become lost in art, in a never ending series of inquiries as to how such a sculpture or painting could be physically possible. Although, science will reassure us as to what is possible and what will remain limited to a picture, or expression of thought or questioning. To evaluate Braqueââ¬â¢s claim one must look to art, and the aspects thereof, that defy and upset nature and natural science. Next, the process by which science can reassure ââ¬Ëwhat isââ¬â¢, as opposed to a representation of the artistic. And last, what the reassurance of science, as w ell as, the nature of art entail in their representational and informative nature. Art itself has proven throughout time to confuse many, all of the thoughts by the creators seem to be in the slightest way manipulative of that which every person would think scientifically so. Dance and the Theater, a place where art has flourished, is an example of how deceit and manipulation have manifested themselves in an art form that is revered, and held to be a distinguishing skill; acting. Seeing the ghost of Oedipus come back to haunt his children, is something that is far beyond what anyone has experienced in reality, and instills in individuals a mystical image of what could be. Or, the people indigenous to North America performing dances in attempt to cause rain, and perhaps an occasional rainfall to follow, only serves to upset the theories of natural science. These are both examples of what art has done to upset the view that one has on the way things work. Not everyone sees their dead father return in a pale, luminescent mist to speak to them, yet, Shakespearean a ctors would make us think otherwise. It may be thought that this form of art would only serve as a method of human expression, and would actually be pure and true in revealing something about human nature, but this is not necessarily the case.

William Wordsworth Essay -- Poet Poetry Wordsworth Papers
William Wordsworth William Wordsworth was born April 7, 1770, at Cockermouth in Cumberland, England. His poetry, and especially his poems on solitude, must have been heavily influenced by the death of his mother and the splitting up of his family when he was only eight (Kilvert 1). At that time, fate sent him to live in Hawkshead, England, where his teacher started him writing poetry. Wordsworth got his higher education at Cambridge, his memories of which play a part in his later poetry (Noyes 201). Fate again stepped in when, as a young man, he received an inheritance, which gave him the freedom to study literature. One might guess that this is when he first became part of the Romantic movement, (Pinion, 21). The poetry of William Wordsworth beautifully displays the characteristic themes of English Romanticism. Wordsworth's poems express basic feelings and soaring emotions, idealize the simplicity of rural life, portray the glories of nature, and give flight to the imagination, with bold symbols, colorful imagery and high ideals. It is perhaps, the simple expression of feelings which most clearly underlies Romanticism (Pinion 22). Nowhere is raw, uncomplicated feeling better put in words than in Wordsworth's poems. There developed what has been called his "visionary imagination." His collections of poetry include "Lyrical Ballads," "The Prelude," and "The Excursion." The beautiful poetry of Wordsworth is a good example of English Romanticism. Four characteristics of romantic poetry are: putting strong feelings into words (Abrams,145); using the power of imagination (Pinion, 142ff); showing the joy of solitude (Abrams, 74); and giving a sense of the supernatural or the strange (Bush, 44). I have chosen to discuss a poem ... ...ur past happiness, rather than feeling sad. Happy memories make being alone a joy. We have only to close our eyes and think of the most beautiful sights we have ever seen. It is noteworthy that the golden daffodils are seen as gleeful and are "jocund company." They bring joy and happiness to the lonely poet, and it is the happiness that he remembers. With the gift of memory, his heart may even "dance" with the flowers. Now, his solitude is not just bearable, but full of pleasure. Thus, Wordsworth's poems show characteristics of romantic poetry, in general. Two of the themes almost come together into one-- the joy of solitude and the power of imagination. The third theme of the super natural gives a strange quality to some of the poems. However, the fourth theme, the strong expression of feeling, is most important and, in a way, includes all of the other themes.
Homer’s Ideal of Excellence
Throughout this excerpt of ââ¬Å"The Iliadâ⬠by the great poet Homer, shows the ideals way back into their era. In this epic segregated values of both men and women are seen in Homerââ¬â¢s era. This epic story begins with the young prince of Troy, Paris, who kidnaps Helen, wife of the king of the Greek state of Sparta. After this treachery towards Sparta the Spartan kings Brother, Agamemnon, attacked Troy. The excerpt begins with Parisââ¬â¢s brother, Hector, another prince of Troy, is talking to his wife, Andromache, just before he goes to fight Achilles. Achilles is a great warrior which has slain many foes with nothing but a scratch including all of Andromache all seven brothers who he fought all at once. Andromache attempts to plead to Hector to flee, but his honor and courage strives him to continue to his impending doom. These words spoken by both Hector and Andromache seem as though they both knew it was most likely was going to be their last words. The way Homer writes the tone of these last words between husband and wife were so compelling in the fact that a mans honor and bravery were way more important than staying alive and taking care of his new born son and wife. From just reading this part of Homerââ¬â¢s writing it is obvious how it shaped the minds of all of Greece and set values among the people of the era. After reading this part of the poem understanding it comes to light by fully seeing how the honor of a man in this era is more important than anything even including your own family. This can be seen When Homer writes; ââ¬Å"â⬠All that, my dear,â⬠said the great Hector of the glittering helmet, ââ¬Å"is surely my concern. But if I hid myself like a coward and refused to fight, I could never face the Trojans and the Trojans ladies in their trailing gownsâ⬠. Also Homer goes on to illustrate that he must because that is how Hector was raised and how he must uphold his families honor in the name of his deceased father. Another thing that can be seen is very important to the people of this era was their need to make their gods happy, which in Greek culture was Zeus. The last words of Hector before he goes to fight the unstoppable soldier, Achilles, was praying to the great Greek gods, but not for himself, instead for his son to be just as strong and brave as himself and to be a mighty king of Ilium. He then continues to pray to make his son an even better man then himself. This brought upon another ideal in mind, the linage of your family. As in back then when you were born you automatically obtained all of you bloodlines successes and failures and were marked by them. At the end of the excerpt Hector says to his wife to not be worried about him and not to be distressed but instead continue on her duties at home, where she should continue looming and using the spindles. He then goes on to say how war has no business with women and how it is the business of every man and especially himself since he is the prince of Troy. This emphasizes how the duties were segregated among the Greek people. How women are condemned to taking care of the children, cleaning, and looming cloths whereas men were condemned to death in war for their rulers. These poems did not record history yet the Greek people took these stories as authentic history causing a past in which they can look upon when seeking guidance on what they should do in the Greek culture and ideals. Also they gave the Greek people with a cast of heroes like Hector and Achilles to be their role model. These poems brought both men and women a guide of what they should do to pursue arete (or excellence) among their society. Whether it was inside the household or out on the battlefields both men and women by the Homeric world were taught to pursue excellence (or arete). The ââ¬Å"Iliadâ⬠and the ââ¬Å"Odysseusâ⬠shaped the ideals of the Greeks and gave a model for the rest of Greek culture to follow.

Strategic Development of Management Accountantââ¬â¢s Role
Strategic Development on Management Accountantââ¬â¢s Role: The Impact on Costing and Budgeting Introduction The companyââ¬â¢s existent state of affairs has alerted the demand for alteration and invention in the direction technics employed. Therefore, to assist inform future strategic determinations, a procedure of research and development has been initiated in order to reexamine current patterns and assess new techniques. This study addresses how the direction accounting ( MA ) function has changed within strategic determination doing context every bit good as how the usage of modern-day attacks to bing and budgeting can practically impact companies public presentation taking into history strategic direction. The altering function of MA within the context of strategic determination devising The direction comptrollers ( MAââ¬â¢s ) function has been traveling through alterations, consisting a diminution in the ââ¬Ëscorekeepingââ¬â¢ function and, a corresponding addition in ââ¬Ëbusiness-consultancyââ¬â¢ functions ( Hopper and Scapens et al. , 2007 ) . It shows a alteration from a function as inactive manufacturers of fiscal information, to a more proactive function including active engagement in determination devising and a focal point on a broader set of information than merely entirely fiscal. Therefore, the MAââ¬â¢s function is altering from an administrative degree to the strategic one, i.e. from ââ¬Å"bean countersâ⬠to ââ¬Å"business partnersâ⬠( Paulsson, 2012 ) . Other faculty members support the altering function of MA, such as Burns and Baldvinsdottir ( 2007 ) who mention globalisation, displacements in engineering, accounting dirts, and corporate tendencies ; while Pierce and Oââ¬â¢Dea ( 2003 ) supply a list of factors that inclu de, the grade of decentalisation of the accounting map, development of describing systems, corporate civilization, and debut of new MA tools. However, it is argued that MAââ¬â¢s function had expanded instead than changed ( Burns and Baldvinsdottir, 2005 ) . In fact, it is of import to retrieve the nucleus values of traditional accounting have ne'er truly disappeared ( Baldvinsdottir et al. , 2009 ) . The addition in competition and the outgrowth of more client focused markets have besides driven a alteration in MA function ( Cooper and Dart, 2009 ) . As a consequence, a downswing in gross revenues and an addition in costs could be partly due to non accommodating to those alterations fast plenty. A determination based on traditional accomplishments would non help directors in doing better strategic determinations and accordingly non viing with rivals who seem to hold developed their function. The fact that traditional MA accomplishments have merged with new 1s will add the concerns strategic success in the fast moving concern epoch ( Jarvenpaa, 2007 ) . The handiness of user friendly and analytical package has freed up infinite for the MAââ¬â¢s to execute more sophisticated undertakings such as strategic determination devising and develop the necessary ââ¬Ëhard skillsââ¬â¢ needed, which means going an analyst and concern spouse compared to a simple figure cruncher ( Pauls son, 2012 ) . With MA heading towards a ââ¬Ëbusiness partnerââ¬â¢ type function ( Vaivio, 2006 ) , it has become common for direction comptrollers to be involved in countries such as strategic determination devising ( Sunarni, 2013 ) . Similarly, it is thought that by germinating the traditional function of merely supplying internal information to unifying this with external information, direction comptrollers can help directors more efficaciously when doing a strategic determination for the company ( Kidane, 2012 ) . Once a strategic determination has been made, a specific direction tool can be used to help in doing the tactical determination. In order to heighten the future economic value of the company ( Kaplan and Norton, 1996 ) the balanced scorecard ( BSC ) attack should be used, as it measures public presentation through strategic aims, which so drives betterment in merchandises and market development ( Kaplan and Norton, 1993 ) . It besides will let the company to utilize peculiar scheme to steer determinations at all degrees through communicating, and it can be used to accomplish single and company marks ( Kaplan and Norton, 1996 ) . The practical impact of modern-day attacks to bing and budgeting As a response to the challenges over environmental and internal procedure alterations within MA function, new techniques and constructs have been adopted. Those have helped MAââ¬â¢s to bring forth more elaborate and accurate methods, so that misdirecting signals associated with traditional methods were avoided ( Cooper and Dart, 2009 ) . However, a job associated with the debut of new attacks is that they are significantly more dearly-won to implement and run compared to traditional attacks as staff utilizing them will necessitate advanced preparation and new package will be required ; therefore, being avoided by little administrations ( Hansen et al. , 2009 ) . Although there are high costs associated with these attacks many houses have adopted these new attacks, proposing that the benefits overweigh the operating costs ( Hansen et al. , 2009 ) . An illustration of a modern-day budgeting attack would be Zero-based budgeting ( ZBB ) , which was introduced to get the better of restrictions of incremental budgeting ( Drury, 2012 ) . ZBB allows companies to prioritise and choose plans and degrees of attempt which best meet its aims ; ensuing in an intensive direction engagement in the budgeting procedure, coercing them to research options in budgetary determinations doing ( Dean and Cowen, 1979 ) . In fact, ZBB can advance efficiency as directors need to warrant their undertakings, promoting them to seek for the most efficient every bit good as cost-efficient solutions ( Rasmussen, 2003 ) . It is besides found to restrict the growing of disbursals in the company, unlike those who use traditional attacks, and to arouse the engagement of more line directors in the budget procedure ( Dean and Cowen, 1979 ) . Similarly, the company would profit by following throughput accounting as it is a step of public presentation ( Gregory et al. , 1995 ) and is a time-based costing technique which applies the theory of restraints ( Drury, 2012 ) . It would maximize the companyââ¬â¢s ends as the technique focuses on the companies restraints ( Dean and Sharfman, 1996 ) by hiking net incomes sustainably and run intoing the companyââ¬â¢s strategic aims ( Gregory et al. , 1995 ) . It encourages determination devising to be communicated on an organizational footing advancing a positive alteration within the administrations civilization. Although the company, by utilizing this technique, can accomplish short term net income maximization ( Dean and Sharfman, 1996 ) with a ââ¬Ëshort term determination horizonââ¬â¢ , it would non profit in the long term because long term net incomes are non sustained ( Robinson, 1990 ) . Activity based costing ( ABC ) was developed in order to battle the restrictions that the traditional technique of soaking up bing carried. This new technique will help the company in bettering strategic determination procedure by bring forthing elaborate and accurate information as it uses a greater figure of cost Centres and different types of cost drivers ; guaranting that misdirecting signals associated with traditional costing methods are avoided ( Drury, 2012 ) .Impacting the firmââ¬â¢s profitableness as it eliminates costs and losingss linked to unprofitable merchandises, services and clients that fail to heighten the worthiness of the house ( Drury, 2012 ) .According to Kennedy and Afflek-Graves ( 2001 ) , it provides a good footing for future hard currency flow projections, which in bend aid houses to take investings in value-added activities and increase stockholders value. Harmonizing to Chea ( 2011 ) , ABC recognises the relationships each driver has with a merchandise or activity ; therefore, bettering merchandise cost truth. This gives the direction of an administration a clear image on chances to cut down costs ( Kaplan and Norton, 2001 ) . ABC has been shown to better firmsââ¬â¢ public presentation in market and accounting related steps as it gives directors a better apprehension of cost/resource direction ( Lambert and Sponen, 2011 ) . A survey conducted on UK houses found that the houses utilizing ABC had shown to surpass matched non-ABC houses by 27 % and that ABC adds value to houses through better cost controls and plus use ( Kennedy and Afflek-Graves, 2001 ) . It provides the company with critical information about which services make demands on which duty Centres and functional sections, assisting to place which services add value to the company ( Jabbour, 2009 ) . However, it has been reported that ABC still does incorporate major subje ctive allotments which restricts the truth of it cost information ( Cooper and Kaplan, 1992 ) . Kennedy and Afflek-Graves stated that ââ¬Å"the end of ABC is to increase net incomes, non to obtain more accurate costsâ⬠( 2001 ) . The development of ABB has shown to be an betterment from traditional methods by puting more realistic budgets and besides, improved designation of resource demands. It has besides helped to increase the accent and truth of budget end products ( Huynh et al. , 2003 ) . ABB has shown to be more effectual in pull offing costs as it presents a model which allows a company to calculate out the sum of resources that are required to accomplish the budgeted degree of activity ( Huynh et al. , 2013 ) . This allows them to do appropriate accommodations during the budget scene stage ( Drury, 2012 ) .This will assist the company make up one's mind what activities should be undertaken in order to run into budgeted production and gross revenues volume. ABB provides critical information in greater item which will assist steer direction comptrollers make right determinations on how much resources should be allocated to each activity, i.e. a more precise manner to project future costs ( Atkinson et al. , 2008 ) . Once this method has been adopted the company will be able to interpret its vision into scheme with determinable marks in order to make value, which includes disbursals, net income borders and productiveness addition, every bit good as cost of capital decreases ( Huynh et al. , 2013 ) . Therefore, it can be used for companiesââ¬â¢ efficiency and effectiveness rating. However, it merely accentuate cost managementââ¬â¢ control and be aftering intent ( Blocher et al. , 2005 ) . When a company uses ABC and ABB at the same time it normally develops an activity based operational method i.e. activity based direction ( ABM ) , which consequences on an homogenous working environment ; therefore, easing communicating and helping as an effectual theoretical account for strategic decision-making ( Huynh et al. , 2013 ) . By implementing ABM the company is utilizing a strategic cost direction system looking at cost and procedure dimensions for cost decrease ( Blocher et al. , 2005 ) . The use of ABM additions companyââ¬â¢s profitableness and fight every bit good as improves operational control because it distinguish value-added from non-value added costs by analyzing managersââ¬â¢ undertaken actions on an activity based base ( Huynh et al. , 2013 ) . Decision Having exposed MAââ¬â¢s to new countries, specifically in the country of concern direction, is doing their function more proactive when it comes to determination devising. Therefore, words like concern and spouse are cardinal as directors and MAââ¬â¢s are going bonded together to do a stronger squad and heighten strategic determination devising. Strategic direction is an of import country which should be developed within this fabrication company ; therefore, BSC should be implemented as it would give the company a strategic acquisition capacity, through roll uping feedback and proving the companyââ¬â¢s scheme before doing determinations. It is clear that the debut of modern-day attacks to bing and budgeting have significantly impacted organisations operations, particularly on the function of MAââ¬â¢s within context of strategic determination devising. If the company stop up by utilizing ABC system for productââ¬â¢ costing, it should besides build an activity based budgeting and direction for efficiency intent, as a strategic determination. Therefore, the acceptance of an activity based direction line would give directors a clear position of the companiesââ¬â¢ consequences taking directors to run control and do strategic determinations. Contemplation This whole group work was a challenge. Everything started when we are non in our original assigned groups and we end up together after a strategic move by coachs to apportion pupils by attending. We started working under force per unit area ; we were two hebdomads behind other groups and have non worked together antecedently made it even more hard as we did non cognize how to move with each other. When get downing we agreed to work in every point increasingly together, which was decidedly non a reasonable determination as we were already late. All that issues were originating because we wanted to b democratic and allow everyone hold equal authorization in the group, which was taking to inefficiency in organisational degree, task assignment degree and deadline conformity degree. We finally noticed that, ensuing on one of the member self-entitled herself as the leader and started delegating undertakings and making deadlines. We managed to complete the work but it would be better if we had worked determined place from the started. We have learned that leading is a cardinal point for teamwork.
